Week 1 Animation Studio

I began the Animation course with the World Project, where, after being assigned into groups, we began designing and sketching a world that we created. (My group consisted of Matthias, Alicia, Emma and Natasha.)

Our first ideas for a world were a crystalline planet, with everything being made of crystals or designed around it. Next, there was an Idea put forward by Matthias for a kingdom of floating islands above a deserted landscape. His concept, shown below, had the idea that the surface of the planet had been over-industrialised, and the remainder of the population moved into the sky for survival.
We thought that this concept, while interesting, was already well under way and almost complete, and as a result, decided to change it heavily, so that other ideas and thoughts could be incorporated into it from the entire group. So, we landed on the idea of a single island powered by a crystalline force. Along with this, we decided to have the island float over a gas planet, rather than earth.

Our group then split off to imagine how this idea would work individually, where we would then convene later on and decide on a final concept. These sketches are shown below.

In the end, we landed on the idea that this island, and whoever had created it, were a somewhat scientific group, which fuelled the design of the buildings. They ended up looking like a research facility carved out of a mountain. Below are my sketches and contributions.

I was mainly focused on the design of the city above the island rather than it's general appearance, and was curious about the way that a civilization living on a rock would develop buildings. I concluded that the city would end up very tall and cramped. I also had the idea that the pressure from the buildings being constructed would begin to destroy the ground underneath, since the civilization was ignoring it's basis through such extensive construction.

Finally, we presented the ideas and then got a new project.
