Drawing Pinocchio, Dirk and Mim (Again)
With the insight gained from my last Life Drawing class, I began drawing Pinocchio again. I was surprised to find that I was a good deal more confident in my drawings. I watched scenes from Pinocchio while drawing, and that also gave me a sense of how his body morphs for effect. I also resumed drawing Dirk the Daring, and again I think that some of my confusion with his body shape has waned, and I can draw him a bit more expressively.
While practicing for the next class, I think took Mike's advice well. He suggested that I draw Pinocchio as a rounded out human, and I think this tip gave me insight into how his skull and his arms work. His body isn't really a doll, it's more of a baby shape.
Mike's response was more negative than I expected. I didn't realise that I'd forgot to think about Madam Mim's hips and knees, so I lost a lot of the logic in my images. He agreed that Mim was more difficult, but I do feel like I need to refocus on my shapes, rather than the details.
In the above images, I think there is a bit more understanding of gestures, although there is still a long way to go. I think Mike's advice helped me a bit from last week, and his advice has really helped. I drew with a lot more focus on the action, and drew in the from later. I think this can be seen in the above Images.
When drawing Mim, however, I struggled. I couldn't get her face or head right, and I think it's because I get lost in the style of her form, and forget to focus on shapes. I lose the form and the structure behind her. While the Images look complete, the shapes don't really gel. The face isn't convincing either.

In Class:
I feel like I've regressed a bit this week in terms of my ability to draw a character. It could be that Drawing Dirk was more difficult, or that my mind was preoccupied. In the above images, I think there is a bit more understanding of gestures, although there is still a long way to go. Next week, I'll need to figure out how to design my own character, and that's something I think I'll struggle with even more.
