Week 10: Animatics and Temp Tracks.
To begin the week, Jacob and I sketched out a rough storyboard for our sequence in the Hell world that looks something like this:
Unfortunately, the rest of our group was unable to join us for various reasons. So, it would have to wait until the day later to put together a better plan. When this arrived, I ended up being tasked to animate a sequence in our film. The purpose of my sequence was to show that life has developed on a deserted planet. To do this, I'm showing an image of the planet, fading it to an image of a single cell organism, and then fading it to an image of a fried egg. This will hopefully show that humanity has arrived on the planet.

| Although It's not easily visible here, we put together all of our Ideas and planned out the shots we would use. |
To accomplish this, I'm going to try and use Adobe Flash or Animate. Along with this, I want to do some research on the way that the development of civilisation is presented, especially when time lapsing from one idea to the next.
Research:
The closest idea I can think of to my sequence is the famous edit from 2001: A Space Oddyssey. As well as this, I have to think about editing with meaning, along with drawing with meaning. The edit's I'm doing are called "match-cuts", and I'll have to think about pacing these reasonably as well. In 2001, there's a lot of space given to understand what the edit meant. With mine, I'll have a lot less time, so I think that I'll fade the edits instead.
This clip gave me ideas for what I'm working with (even though it has some annoying music)

The video below is what I put together for my segment of the Animatic:
I added pieces to my animatic, since match cutting from a single celled organism to a fried egg is a bit too much for people to understand. When I had showed the animatic to people beforehand, they didn't really understand what was happening. So adding this in made people understand.
In reflection on match cutting, I think it works best when there is plenty of time for the audience to understand what happened, since they take a moment to register with people. On top of that, match cuts are usually only used when it shows a person, and the cut is trying to show a change in age. With my match cut, I was aiming too high, so I think my changes were necessary.
It was also interesting this week to learn how to animate in Flash. I'd used ages ago just for fun, but I'd forgotten completely how to use it. I'm glad I picked it up again, and can now use it (relatively) comfortably.
The final edit for our Animatic is here:
Unfortunately I was very sick and couldn't be there to present it.
