Semester 2 Week 12 Animation Narratives Part 1

Final Week Progress Blog

The rendering has been going on for the last 2 weeks, and things are getting pretty rough. While I thought the renders were going fine, there's been a few problems with render layers and with the animation.

Render Layer Problems

A few render layers have had some incompatibility with the standard volume shader I've been using. The standard volume has been great to get the visuals and the lighting looking realistic, but when I use render layers, there's a strange border when I pull the layers into after effects. I don't know why this is happening, but it's not the pre multiplication of the alpha layer, it's something to do with the way Maya is rendering the light. I don't have time to fix this in After Effects, so I had to re-render these frames tonight, which has set me back by a day.

Animation Setback

The character animation for one of the shots lasts longer than the background render I'd set up. I tried just rendering the extra background frames, but they don't match up with the original render. So, I had to re-render the entire background and foreground, which has again set us back by a day. I can't figure out what part of the render settings didn't match with my original render, and besides, the problem with the Render Layers I mentioned earlier basically meant I had to re render it anyway. Hopefully thins will be okay, and the scene will be edited by tomorrow, it's annoying, and it's messed with my plans and sleep schedule.

I've definitely learned to have a lock on the Maya file before rendering begins, because otherwise this mess happens, and things change, and renders have to be done again.

I'll have a more complete blog about the last two weeks on friday, I just wanted to mention these problems now.
